Kendall-Jackson Heirloom Tomato Festival

You'll be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful setting than the Kendall-Jackson Wine Estate & Gardens. Located in the quaint town of Fulton just north of Santa Rosa in California's Sonoma County, the vineyards are a joy to visit whether for a wine tour, wine tastings or a picnic. And if you happen to be in the area on Saturday, September 26, 2015, you'll want to make sure to stop by. That's when the 19th Annual Kendall-Jackson Heirloom Tomato Festival takes place from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. There will be much to see and do. First off, there's the savoring of the flavors of the over 150 varieties of tomatoes that are grown in the winery's culinary gardens. Other activities include taking a garden tour, sitting down to palate-pleasing wine and food pairings, and attending an array of seminars.

Of course, the highlight of the day is the judging of the heirlooms and the awarding of the Best of Show Tomato. There are three categories: Division One features cherry and currant tomatoes, Division Two covers white and green, yellow and orange, pink and red, and purple, brown, and black tomatoes, and Division Three is for the heaviest tomato. The afternoon is also filled with music, which will be provided by Andre Thierry, a Grammy-nominated performer known for his alternative Creole songs. Funds raised at this event will go to the Ceres Community Project, which brings together teens as chefs and gardeners to teach them about eating well. Throughout the year, they will prepare more than 90,000 meals for area families who are in need due to serious health issues.
