Healdsburg Area Wine History

Fine wine and food converge quite nicely in the scenic setting of Sonoma County, known for its gentle hills, vineyards and deluxe accommodations. Winemaking has been a strong tradition here for more than 130 years, thanks to the influx of immigrants including the Russian fur trappers who inspired the name for the Russian River Valley, and the French and Italians who brought with them their own wine production techniques that were then passed along through the different generations.

The location and temperate climate of the Russian River Valley create the environment to produce Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, while the Alexander Valley has the right conditions for Cabernet and Merlot. However, oenophiles will be glad to know they can also enjoy abundant Barbera, Sangiovese, and Reisling, among other varietals. Today visitors can taste wines al fresco thanks to many establishments featuring picnic area, patios, decks and gardens.
